What's happening with Plymouth Argyle - It has really been quite a 2 seasons with 2 relagations in a row but if a good buyer is found for the club in the coming weeks, it could potentially spell a turning point for the club. It is rumoured that an Irish consortium are interested to buy Plymouth Argyle although it has been mentioned that they might have a real estate and property agenda. One hopes that whoever buys the club, the fans and the club are put first. Time will tell.

Tamar High School Reunion - if you left Tamar High School in 1986 (or 1988 if you went on to do A Levels), do not forget that the Class of 86 reunion will be taking place on 19th November 2011. Noted class comic Paul Harris will be doing a 5 minute stand up comedy routine it is hotly rumoured - thus this is an event not to be missed. Where to stay on Plymouth Hoe - We recently needed to stay in Plymouth Hoe for a night and we tried out one of the Guest Houses we have not stayed in before. The Seymour Guest House (211 Citadel Road East, The Hoe) is run by Ray and Karen Cooke and is one of the best Guest Houses on the Hoe in my opinion. Walkabout (5 Union Street) - This is a national chain of bars which is well versed at catering for students and the younger crowd in general. It is an Australian themed bar which turns into a club during the night. There is a student friendly menu and a card which students can sign up for which allows the holder to significant drinks discounts. Located on Union Street, this bar is in the thick of the action. Especially popular for many sporting events with students and local alike.
Cuba Bar (1 Sherwell Arcade, North Hill) - Situated right on the edge of the city centre, opposite the main university building and in the highly populaed student area, this is a popular hang out these days for students in Plymouth. Cuba has a good atmosphere and often has live music and is many people's favourite on a Friday night. Definitely worth trying out at least once to see if you like it.
Pitcher and Piano - This bar in the city centre offers a good location to meet with friends whilst enjoying food and drink at reasonable places. Whilst you probably wouldn’t want to spend the night here, it is certainly a great place to meet. Another brand style pub and cheap and cheerful and popular with budget conscious students. The food tends to be pretty good and the inside spacious.

Shopping in Plymouth, Devon

If there is one thing Plymouth is certainly good for it might not be football but it is shopping. In recent years, with the development of the modern Drake Circus Shopping Centre and with the pedestrianisation of the centre many years before, this is a perfect city centre for all.

Those of you who have spent time in the U.S., will appreciate that apart from NYC, American cities have no real city centre, but a downtown area. British cities though all tend to have a hub and the traditional British city centre is not more prominent than in Plymouth.

Need a Cornish Pasty? Want to just buy some sports gear on the cheap or want some labelled clothing? Plymouth is as good as just about any city outside of London and Oxford Street for shopping.

I have found that one of the best ways to go about this is to take up a course on the subject and get actual qualification on the subject by studying travel and tourism in the UK. 3 Trips worth doing from Plymouth

1. Looe and Polperro - a very cute fishing town and a great placew to sample traditional fish and chips with fish straight from the sea. A relatively short drive from Plymouth.

2. The Eden Project - A drive a bit further down into Cornwall but well worth it. A great chance to see the biodiverse set up. A truly unusual and interesting attraction. Can be done as a day trip from Plymouth. More on the Eden Project.

3. Torquay and Paignton - The English Riveria as it known, is a great chance to see the coastal beauty of the UK.

New Plymouth Argyle pitch - After a poor season for Plymouth Argyle with a season which resulted in relegation from the Championship football league down to Division 1 for the 2010-2011 season, there is at least some respite.

Plymouth Argyle fans at least have the excitement this May 2010 at seeing the old pitch completely dug up as a new state of the art football pitch is installed. A Fibrelastic pitch is the replacement for the old pitch and this pitch although used for a few clubs (Newcastle United and Cardiff City) is a sense of interest and excitement in the city.

With so many injuries in recent seasons, this type of surface is considered to be much better for the players and far less likely to result in injury.

Devon ice cream - Plymouth's Best

I have an Italian wife and every time I go to Sicily and also to other parts of Italy, they always go on about the ice cream and how good it is. The thing for me though is that my favourite is Devonshire ice cream.

I find that the ice cream you get for example from the vans on the Hoe or direct from the farm shops tastes much creamier and tasty. I guess really it is all about what you were bought up with. I have tasted ice cream from all over Italy and I'd prefer the Devon ice creams any day.

The same with desserts. Have you ever tried to get Fresh Cream desserts in Italy? Quite hard! Can a fresh cream apple turnover ever be beaten?

5 Best Things to see in Plymouth, England

There is plenty to see and do in Plymouth and plenty to fill those days when visiting Plymouth on holiday. Below my suggestions for 5 good things to see and do in Plymouth, England.

1. Plymouth Gin does actually come from Plymouth. Danish pastries may not come from Denmark and French fries may not come from France, but Plymouth Gin does come from Plymouth, England. The distillery is on the Barbican and you can do a tour of the facilities.

2. Plymouth Hoe which overlooks Plymouth Sound is a place to enjoy wonderful views and to sunbathe when the weather is good. Plymouth Hoe is a great place to relax and busy in the summer time.

3. Smeatons Tower Lighthouse is actually on Plymouth Hoe and you can go up inside the lighthouse. Well worth doing!

4. The Barbican is the older part of Plymouth and close to the fish market and is the historical park. Plymouth Aquarium can also be found in this area.

5. If you enjoy walking through parks then Central Park in Plymouth could be for you. It is also where Plymouth Argyle's stadium is situated.

Save energy in Plymouth by trying wind power. Biy do we get enough wind!

British Fireworks Championships 2009

The British Fireworks Championships will again take place in Plymouth for 2009, in what is now becoming established as an annual event on Plymouth Hoe.

The even attracts in excess of 10,000 people and is considered the premier event in the UK for Fireworks enthusiasts. My dog doesn't enjoy the fireworks quite as much but it is nonetheless, a very popular event.

The exact dates for August 2009 are not yet available but we'll let you know as soon as we know. You are advised to bo0k accommodation as soon as the dates are released because it gets busy in the city on Fireworks weekend. The show always includes:

Pyrotechnic displays
Several freworks companies
Food vendors and stalls

The fireworks can be seen from Plymouth Hoe and the shores around Plymouth Sound.

So what is there to do in Plymouth during the winter months? Is Plymouth worth visiting and is there another going on normally? The answer is that there are several things worth doing.

Plymouth Pavilions are one place worth visiting and with a number of world class performers often performing at the centre, which is located just off the side of the city centre.

Football fans can visit and have the benefit of watching high quality football with Plymouth Argyle home matches taking place at Home Park in Central Park, Plymouth.

The Barbican in Plymouth is also well worth walking around and Plymouth Gin museum is quite interesting.

Plymouth Argyle have had an indifferent start to the season with a few good wins, a few unfortunate losses and a few draws. With a place in the top half of the Championship it could have been a worse start.

Argyle's form in the carling Cup though has been good to date and tomorrow see's Plymouth face Premiership opposition against West ham United, in London. Plymouth will certainly be the underdogs although away from home, Argyle have played quite well and they will certainly be hoping to pull off a shick result.

The struggle for Plymouth Argyle fans to get through the summer months without football, will soon be over with Argyle's first match of the seaosn to be away to Hull on Saturday 11th August 2007.

With an 11th place finish in the Championship last season, along with a glarious run in the FA Cup, through to the quarter finals, Plymouth and their manager Ian Holloway will surely be hoping at least to hit the play-off places this time around.

The Eden Project is in effect a number of huge environmental greenhouses which house over one million different plants and species from different world climates. There are different climatic zones within the Eden project and there are 2 huge Biomes.

For fun, I thought I would list for you on this blog, the top 10 things I like about Plymouth. So here goes.

1. The almighty Plymouth Argyle, a football team who in the next few years are bound for the Premiership and Europe. I can dream!

2. The Barbican and the Hoe. It's great to live in a city which coastline and great view.

3. The city centre. I love the fact that the centre is pedestrianised and has every kind of shop you could need in one area.

4. Location. For travelling Devon and Cornwall, Plymouth is pefectly located right between the two.

5. Plymouth is connected to both France and Spain by ferry.

The Barbican in Plymouth - Tourist attaction (8th Apr 07)

The Barbican in Plymouth is one area which I would certainly recommend visiting when you travel around around Devon or Cornwall. The Barbican is easy to walk around and is easily worthy for half a day set aside.

The Barbican in Plymouth has sites worth seeing which include:

The Mayflower Steps where the Sir Francis Drake left from before his discovery of America.
The Plymouth Gin musuem. Enjoy a tour and a tipple of Plymouth Gin
Enjoy the smell and sounds of the fish market in the mornings
The fairly new Plymouth Aquarium
The boat trips which leave from the Barbican and take you on various tours

Plymouth has a long history as a maritime port and the waterside is a must. Take in some of the history, enjoy the sea air and also there are lots of pubs in the Barbican!

Definitely though, if going to visit the Barbican, try and choose one of the summer months as it will make a big difference to your trip. Walking around the Barbican in Plymouth in the winter time might not be the most exciting thing but in the summer it is worth including on your Devon and Cornwall schedule for sure.

City of Plymouth abuzz as the FA.. CUP quarter final game approaches (9th March 07)

Anticipation is the order of the day as the city of Plymouth awaits Sunday afternoon and the pending FA Cup quarter final between Plymouth Argyle and Watford. It is near 20 years since Plymouth have got so far in what is considered one of the top club competitions in the world, for football.

Twenty thousand fans will pack into Home Park on Saturday and teh game is sure to be exciting with Plymouth hoping for a vistory which will then likel ysee them playing a top gun such as Chelsea or Man Utd. Come on the greens!

Plymouth, Devon atractions - Smeaton´s Tower

One Plymouth atraction you might want to experience is Smeaton’s Tower, on Plymouth Hoe. The lighthouse used to be based on the Eddystone reef in 1759 but it was eventually movedin the 1880s. The lighthouse was moved stone by stone and revuilt on land on the Plymouth Hoe. The lighthouse provides some intersting views of Plymouth and it is open to the public all year round.

Plymouth Hoe itself is also well worth walkign to from the city centre, with a view across the water of Plymouth Sound facing you as you stand on Plymouth Hoe. You can also see the banks of Cornwall just across the water.

These are good days for Plymouthians with both Plymouth Argyle and Plymouth Albion both doing well in their respective sports. Plymouth Argyle are near to the top of the Championship, the 2nd tier of football in England, whilst Plymouth Albion Rugby club are nicely places in Div.1 (the 2nd tier of rugby) as they try to get promotoed to the Premiersip for rugby.

New shopping centre opens in Plymouth - The Armada Centre

The 5th October saw the opening of the brand new Drake Circus shopping centre in plymouth, Devon, bringing some of the top retailers to Plymouth. Next, Oasis, Passion for Perfume, Fraser Hart and Dr China are just a few names you wil find at the Drake Circus shopping centre, Plymouth. The centre is certainly worth popping into although extremely crowded on the first few days. From the outside it looks a monstrosity but in the cold of winter, indoor shopping will surely be popular, in Plymouth.

The Devonport Development and in Plymouth, Devon (11th Oct. 06)

Some of you may be interested to know, if you are not already aware, that the National Regeneration Agency group are involved with the massive Devonport Development in Plymouth. The group are heavily involved with regenerating the South Yard Enclave on the Devonport Dockyard, into a housing development with affordable housing. They will be building more than five hundred houses, a health-centre, shops and offices. Since the 1970s, with the decline in the numbers of people in the British forces, has meant that Devonport Dockyard has dramatically declined as a thriving place of business.

The Devonport regeneration is a part of what the government call their Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy. This strategy combines affordable housing and employment opportunities for local people. The reality is in fact that people from outside of Plymouth are investing in Plymouth. From an investors point of view it is all very interesting particularly what is happening in Plymouth. A huge new shopping mall has been built at Drake Circus (a monstrosity some may say perhaps) and many investors from outside of the Plymouth area have been buying up property and real estate. Some projects in Plymouth have been receiving EU funding, in addition to the regeneration agency funding. The university has continued to expand in size and many student bars and pubs, and also many new outdoor cafes etc have been created.

Plymouth from an investment view, is worth considering. So much money is being thrown into the area, after being neglected for twenty years and it is very noticeable when returning to Plymouth, how the city is growing. Just in the city centre you can see the new eye-sore of a shopping mall, European style outdoor cafes in the city centre and a lot more.

Caravan check before going on holiday (25th Sep. 06)

If you are heading down to Devon or Cornwall with your caravan on holiday, you will want to make sure that your caravan is prepared properly. Below is a list of things you might want to consider. I am NOT a saftey expert, but these are some things to think about.

Inside the caravan
When travelling down the motorway (or expressway as any American readers will say), you will want to be sure that all objects inside the caravan are secured. Make sure for example that the fridge door, all drawers, chairs and other loose items are safe. The windows to the caravan should also be closed and fastened.

On the outside of the caravan
Just like a car or other vehicle, you must ensure that the caravan is in good condition and safe to use. On the caravan, it is worth checking the breaks are good, and that the wheels are safe (including the nuts tight and tyres in good condition) and adjusted. If you are going beyond Devon, i.e. using Plymouth as a travel point to get to France or Spain (via Brittany Ferries) then you might to get your caravan checked over by a garage (if you are travelling long distances).

Holidays on Devon Cliffs (15th Sep. 06)

Before you ask, NO I do not work for Haven Holidays and I have no intention to. I mention this because what you will read in this blog below does perhaps promote Haven but only because I had some great experiences with them.

When your children get older, places like Butlins (which are great for young kids) can become less interesting and as a family, you need something more; the kids want to do more varied things. I found Haven Holidays to solve this problem and with about 35 locations there is a great choice of destination. For camping and caravans in Devon and Cornwall, Haven have bases for example in 'Devon Cliffs', with spa facilities and great sea views.

Perran Sands, (Perranporth), Riviere Sands (Hayle) in addition to Devon Cliffs (Exmouth) are all Haven destinations in Devon and Cornwall. The thing in particular that I peronsally like about their breaks are the fact that there are tonnes of things for both children AND adults. As a parent, it is nice to be able to enjoy the tennis courts, bowling greens, horse-riding, bicycle hire, fencing and archery lessons, indoor heated swimming pool etc.

You can now go caravaning or use your motor-home or tent and pitch up; and then shed yourself of all your clothes for the remainder of your trip. And you would not be alone because up to 40,000 visit Cap D'agde naturism resort at one time, with this being the biggest naturist village in the world. The camping and caravan at Cap D'agde can be booked onlina via Rene Oltra. Many families stay at Cap D'agde and the campsite is very safe, with visitors to the main village required to sign in and then with an addition requirement to sign into the enclosed camping area.

Caravan awnings - Increasing your space (30th Aug. 06)

I am not sure about you, but I am always impressed when I go caravaning or camping and I see the creative way in which people create a nice temporary home. One of the ways this temporary living space is created is with awnings. People go camping with their caravan or motor-home and with the use of an awning they seem to create a little palace to live in fr the duration of their holiday/vacation.

After looking around on the net, the two websites I found that seem useful for learning more about awnings and for choosing one, are the awnings product/manufacturer Bradcot Awnings and also the site Caravaning Online. Next time I go camping (probably in the South of France) my wife and I intend to try buy an awning to take with our motor-home.

Awnings by the way, can be bought as aluminium or steel frames, with the awnings themselves made of several materials, the most common of which is polyester or acrylic. Both are said to be real strong and stable.

Caravan and motorhome holidays gain popularity (23rd Aug 06)

Caravan, camping and motorhome holidays are seeing and are likely to see a further gain in popularity in the tourism field. Unfortunate recent events involving planned terrorism and airlines means that many people are now looking at domestic tourism.

Airport delays, long trips potentially without any hand luggage, baggage handler strikes, extra security checks etc are al possible scearios in this day and age. It seems more appealing to many people to consider caravan holidays in places such as Devon and Cornwall, with the ability to drive door to door a pleasant and preferable choice to the issues mentioned above.

A recent report in the media via 'The Caravan Club'(an orghanisation who have almost 1 million members) estimates that "this year alone members will spend in the region of £900 million on their new and second-hand car purchases". Motorhomes are also said to be selling at a rapid rate.

The trend is moving away from caravaning and camping being for old people. In the last 2 weeks alone to different sets of friends (in their twenties) have invited my wife and I on two different camping trips. Younger people these days seem keen to get a weekend or two away from city life, and appear to me to be taking a keener interest in the coutryside. As a very keen traveller myself, even i findmyself put off a little by recent events at airports and I recently started camping myself.

Caravan holiday 59 years in a row! (10th Aug 06)

It is unbelievable but true. Bernie Bannister of Orton Goldhay, UK has taken the same holiday 59 years in a row. Bernie started to going to his favourite summer camp, Caister Holiday Camp, when he was 15 years old, way back in 1947. Bernie who is now 73, has been back to the camp for the past 59 years and he intends to make it 60 and many more after that. Caister is 100 miles from his home in Peterborough, UK and Bernie states that despite the changes that the camp has gone through over the 59 years, he still loves the camp, where bars, clubs and DVDs are a modern part of life there. Bernie even proposed to his 1st wife Ann at the camp, in addition to spending his honeymoon there.

After being married for 16 years and going to Caister every year, he divorced, remarried and continued his trek to Caister. Bernie now owns his own caravan at the park.

One of my favourite places that I have spent time at on a caravan holiday in Torbay, South Devon, is at Woodliffe Caravans park, Hoburne Torbay. The couple running this family holiday park were extremely helpful and courteous and the location itself was perfect.

The park is located near to a stunning seaside location, in a outstanding natural beauty. The park is a family owned business and has been a self catering caravan holiday park in Paignton, South Devon, for more than 40 years. The sandy beach of Goodrington is just a fifteen minute walk from Hoburne Torbay.

Latest info is that they are offering a BRAND NEW 2006 A2 SUPER DELUXE CARAVAN for rent. This type of caravan comes with:
Sundeck & patio furniture
Fridge/Freezer
DVD Player
Bed linen.

Buying a caravan or Motorhome (28th June 06)

Before going on holiday for your caravaning or motorhome holiday in Devon or Cornwall, you may need to look into buying a suitable vehicle. I have been looking recently into some companies in England for buying caravans and motorhomes. One of the best ways in my humble opinion is to use Motorhome and Caravan Trader which is the same as AutoTrader but dealing with motorhomes and caravans. The second site I'd recommend that I saw, is Caravan Finder, a website with hundreds of second hand caravans on it for sale - from personal private and trade dealers.

Welcome to this blog which wioll bring you the news and best links and stories about Cravaning inDevon and Cornwall, UK. The South-West of England is a beautifulplace in the summer, with some great areas to camp, and with quite reasonable facilities.

There are parks on the edge of Dartmoor, in areas such as Torquay, Paignton, Dawlish and newquay to name but a few.
